What Are the Advantages of Getting a Septoplasty Procedure?

Since this operation is initiated to take care of certain medical problems that involve the septum, like perforations that may have been caused by prolonged snorting of drugs or a broken and crooked nose brought about by an accident, improvements are always welcome.

  • Those who have a septoplasty technique done on their noses for reasons like uncontrollable nose bleeding and sleep apnea problems also find that these problems either disappear altogether or are minimized considerably.
  • For a patient who undergoing this procedure for aesthetic purposes and in conjunction with a rhinoplasty, the new appearance of their nose gives them the kind of confidence they want and need. They also feel that they look better with a smaller nose and a nose that no longer has a deformed area for them to worry about.

What Are the Side Effects of Septoplasty Procedure?

People should know that all types of surgical procedures have risks, possible complications, and a number of side effects that may be minor or can be serious. These are all possible but not inevitable. Some of the possible side effects that often come with most all surgical procedures include swelling, pain, bruising, and bleeding.

  • When you find that your nasal area is swollen and bruised, you need not worry too much about this unless if these side effects last beyond what is the norm, which is a few days to a couple of weeks. If these problems persist beyond this period of time, you may need to consult with your doctor for proper action.
  • Pain may or may not be present after a septoplasty procedure, but just in case it is, doctors often prescribe pain relievers for such an occurrence.
  • Side effects that may occur after the operation and after the healing process include excessive scarring, the return of the blockage, and even an infection. You will need to get in touch with your surgeon right away if you experience side effects like excessive bleeding, fever and difficulty in breathing.

What Does One Need to Do After a Septoplasty Procedure?

After your operation, you might want to spend the night at the recovery facility of the clinic where you had your septoplasty procedure. If you feel you can better take care of yourself at home during the next 24 hours, you may want to ask someone to take you home since you will be somewhat incapacitated and will find it difficult to drive.

  • When you are recuperating at home, you will need to follow the guidelines your doctor gives you on care of yourself and of your nose. One of the things you will need to do is to avoid smoking and drinking of alcohol even when the wounds have healed. These two substances can delay the healing process and may even cause infections so avoiding them is important until your doctor gives you the go signal.
  • You will also need to make sure that no trauma befalls your nose while it is in the healing process.
  • Make sure that you keep your head elevated at all times, even when you sleep, and to ensure that, you will need to prop yourself up with pillows to help keep you in the upright position even while asleep at least for the next 48 hours or so.
